For nearly forty years the
staff at E B I Electronics, Inc. has worked with the educational community to develop the
most cost-effective, user-friendly electronic language labs and digital learning systems.
Beginning with his early experiments using wire recorders to increase his proficiency in
English, Charles Rehbein has continually sought out new methods of using the latest
technology to aid in the teaching of foreign languages. Through his efforts E B I Systems
has established itself as the area's foremost authority in the design and implementation
of these electronic learning centers. E B I Systems installed some of the first electronic
language labs in New England and has introduced new technology that has further increased
both the educational capability and ease of use of these learning centers. In addition,
the development of a new user-friendly instructional system for teachers has substantially
reduced the learning curve for end users and further increased the availability of this
technology for progressive educational systems to help students acquire a higher degree of
oral language proficiency.
The first electronic language
labs were developed in an attempt to create a method of distributing audio interactive
language learning material to the students in a classroom. Using stereo audio tape
recorders these systems allowed the students to record the lesson being played on one
track and record their responses on a separate track. Technology was developed to allow
the teacher to play the lesson material at a centrally located "teacher's
station" and distribute the material to the students' workstations. Further
refinements made video tape and computer based interactive learning materials available to
the students and the improvement of the teacher's station allowed the instructor to send
different programs to different students through a switching console.
